Buying pesticide free fruit directly from grower is a much better choice that has many benefits to your health. A conventional avocado purchased at the grocery store has typically changed many hands over many weeks or often many months, from growers, to pickers, to packing houses, to storage, to distributors, to wholesalers, to retailers. Many times fruit is picked while it is still green, long before it reaches ripeness, to increase the time it can be stored and then chemically ripened as needed.

Major California and Florida commercial shippers offer preconditioned avocados. Softening of avocados is triggered before shipment by ethylene treatment, then the fruit is refrigerated until delivered. That allows uniform softening with rapid turnover and immediate use. Fruit treated with ethylene can be stored up to two weeks.

For these reasons, freshly harvested avocados shipped direct from the grower, should be your go to option.
